Mounting Instructions

FEATURES:

The Attwood Anchor Rein gives immediate access to 32' of nylon

rope, neatly spooled, on a spring-loaded reel. It is ideal for an

anchor rope, tying up slips, docks and pilings, or for use as a tie

down. There are many more uses to which the Anchor Rein can

be put.

A non-abrasive, non-cutting lock device secures rope at desired

length by simply tightening the handle.

Housing made of tough plastic, with ZAMAK handle and stainless

steel ring to insure against rust and corrosion.

WARNING:

DO NOT REMOVE THE SCREW WHICH SECURES THE TWO

PLASTIC HOUSINGS TOGETHER. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO SERVICE

THE SPRING LOADED REEL INSIDE THE PLASTIC HOUSINGS.

THE SPRING IS A COILED PIECE OF METAL AND CAN CAUSE

INJURY IF IT IS RELEASED FROM THE SPRING HOLDER.

TOOLS REQUIRED:

1. Drill and drill bits

2. 3/4" wrench

3. Round rasp (if needed)

INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS:

NOTE: Before you drill a hole in your boat, BE ABSOLUTELY

CERTAIN there is room for the unit beneath the deck or gunwale

where it can be installed flush against the bottom side of the deck

of gunwale without the sides of the spool assembly being jammed

against the side of the boat. Jamming the covers against the sides

will distort the covers, binding them against the spool. This will

restrict the action of the spring and the return of the rope into the

handle. If after installation the rope does not snap back and return

fully into the handle, the following corrective steps should be taken.

Disassemb

le all top hardware EXCEPT the bead/D-ring assembly.

Bring unit out where you can comfortably work on it. Follow

instruction 2. Now, remove cap, screw, bead/D-ring assembly from

top of rope and withdraw rope down through the top hardware and

1/2" drilled hole. Take a 1/2" drill, or round rasp, and enlarge the

hole opposite from the direction it is binding. You can enlarge the

hole as much as 1/2" and still have enough washer to cover the

hole. This will not impair the use or function of the unit.

1. Drill a 1/2" hole at the position selected for the installation

of your unit. Determine the thickness of the hull or mounting

surface. NOTE: Thickness of mounting surface can not

exceed 1".

2. Grasp the knot and pull out 4 feet of rope. Double the rope and

tie simple overhand knot in the rope next to the gasket (see

figure 1). Allow the spring tension to pull this knot against the

gasket. This will secure the rope and give you slack to work

with, without spring tension.

3. From packaging remove:

No. 9 Sealing Washer No. 3 Bead/D-ring assembly

No. 8 Collar No. 1 Cap

No. 7 Brake No. 2 Screw

No. 6 Pusher No. 10 Spacer (rubber)

No. 5 Handle No. 11 Spacer (plastic)

4. Select a suitable spacer as follows:

• Deck thickness up to 3/8"; use No. 11 plastic spacer

• Deck thickness 3/8" to 7/8"; use No. 10 rubber spacer

• Deck thickness 7/8" to 1"; make or buy a hard spacer 3/32"

thick. 1/2" washers can be used.

5. Untie the knot at the free end of the rope and thread it through the

spacer selected above and through the hole (from the reel side)

drilled in step 1. Pull enough rope through so that you can

comfortably proceed with the next step.

6. Take loose end of the nylon rope, roll it in your fingers to help make

a point and thread it through items 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 3 (in that order),

see figure 3. NOTE: On item No. 6, be certain the rope is inserted

into the bottom or flat side. This is important as this flat side acts as

a push plug against the brake. The top side is beveled to allow the

rope smooth and easy entry back into the spool. Also, be certain

to insert the rope end into the small hole (bottom side) of the

bead/D-ring assembly. Pull two or three inches of rope through

the bead/D-ring assembly so you can work it in.

7. Take the end of the rope you have pulled through the bead/D-ring

assembly, hold and roll the very end between your fingers to make

it firm. Take a nail or awl and push down into the center of the rope

to make a pilot hole. Install the screw into the end of the rope until

it is flush. NOTE: Be very careful and particular as the flat head

screw needs to be centered where it will flare the rope top, creating

a tight wedge inside the bead/D-ring assembly. Take the cap (item

No. 1), place squarely on top of bead and snap in. Be sure cap

edges are down flush against the bead.

8. Untie the overhand knot resting against the gasket. Holding the unit

in your hand, allow the spring tension to bring it to the underneath

side of the hole drilled in the boat. With the gasket placed squarely

against the boat and the threaded hole centered, from the top side,

screw the collar through the hole into the unit.You may turn the unit

in any direction that will fit into your boat. Just be certain the gasket

fits flush against the boat so it will line up with the collar threads.

(NOTE: Do not crossthread these two pieces.) You should be able

to hand screw the collar into the unit for several turns until it is
